Design Wall Monday

I worked earlier in the week and made all the optional blocks for the guild year.  You can see the blocks in a previous post.

In addition, I worked on the Pineapple Nine Patch quilt top.  I have the first border on the quilt center.  I pieced the 2nd border and when I went to put the sides onto the top, they wouldn't fit.  I found that Martingale has a corrections page posted online.  So, I'll tackle the quilt top later this week.  Here is a picture of half the quilt top with the border attached but it sure doesn't match up.

Saturday my small guild met and I made this meeting my cutting day.  I cut over 300 tumblers and 300 chisels.  I didn't cut too many apple core shapes as I wanted to test sew them first.  The longest task with using scraps is prepping them for cutting.  I spent hours starching and pressing fabric and a little over an hour to cut all the pieces.  The GO! Cutter has definitely changed the way I view cutting.

So I didn't win a copy of Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Collector's Edition Vol. 2 magazine so I purchased one on Sunday.  I just had to have my own copy as the participating designers had their blocks posted on their blogs last week and they were oh so pretty.  As I was driving home from Hancocks, I thought about the fact that I purchased the first volume of this magazine and did not make one block.  So, the challenge for me is to make ALL the blocks within a year.  I'm starting this week and plan to make 2 blocks per week.  Anyone want to play along?  It would be neat to see the blocks showing up in blog land.  I said I didn't win a magazine.  However, I did win some flurry friends fabric that I should receive in the mail this week.  Check out the fabric at The Whimsical Workshop; they have fabrics and projects that are perfect for children quilts.

One challenge isn't enough!  While shopping this week I came across this drunkard's path sampler.  I was buying door prizes for my scrap quilting club and just couldn't pass up one for me too.  I plan to make these 12 blocks, one per week.  If you want to play along, purchase the Many Paths All Around from Elisa's Backporch Designs (scroll down...I think it's 4th from the bottom).

  2. I saw #2 Block magazine but passed it up hoping I'd win one. Didn't happen and now need to get back to pick it up. there were only 4 and they were at a grocery store! I'm sure the JoAnn's has more. I made at least one block from the first one. I really like them but I'm not going to join you -- but I will be cheering from the sidelines. I've still got several blocks of last year's bom from Bunny Hill Designs. Sigh.

  3. You are so right about the prep time with the scraps. But it was worth it to get so many shapes cut so fast???
So sorry your instructions weren't right, make it very frustrating. Love he DP sampler but I probably won't be making another one anytime soon. I haven't bought the magazine yet but when I do, I would love to play along too. Maybe I'll get that today while I'm out.

  4. LOL! Isn't it funny how we all held out on buying the magazine, until all the giveaways had passed? Love your apple core pieces -- really cute! :)

  5. Wow you get so much done! I was lamenting the same thing with 100 Blocks Vol 1 -- had plans to make a block a month and didn't. However, since Quiltmaker has that great block display/calendar holder pattern and Quilting In the Country is sponsoring a quilt design contest, I might try to get at least one block a month done again this year. I've got year-end finishes and two other BOMs to also work on so I know I can't do more than that!

And funny you should mention the "Many Paths" pattern -- I have the block patterns from back when the designer, Elisa Wilson, offered them as a free BOM on her website. I had collected fabric to make them into a blue & white sampler quilt and made up one block before getting diverted. I wasn't planning on getting back to that one until next year but maybe I can pull them out and play along too, although again, my progress definitely won't be as quick as yours!

  7. I did win a Quiltmaker 100 Blocks magazine from the Blog Tour. How lucky am I! I never purchased Vol 1 and I don't think it is available still. The two blocks a month are any two blocks or some kind of plan you have in mind? How would I be able to play along if I didn't own Vol 1? kwiltnkats@ymail.com Interested....Sandi

  8. I have the pattern and templates for Many Paths. Drunkard's path is my favorite block, so I get weak at the knees when I see a challenge. Count me in. I have to think about the QM 100 Blocks. Maybe if I can finish up the NPP I will play along. Robin

  9. Great idea to make all the blocks. I would love to do that, too, but I haven't got the book (also didn't win). And I would love to make the DP blocks but I don't have a GO and I really hate cutting the parts. Things just haven't gone my way, have they? ;-)

  11. Wow, that's a lot of scrap busting! I love the tumblers and chisels and applecores. Lots of fun to come. Wish I had a GO cutter to help me tame my scraps....
