Scrap Quilting Club

I had scrap quilting club meeting in June and didn't get a chance to post the photos.  Here is a recap of  the projects we are working on that the participants brought for show and tell.

Connie's scrappy tote that was a challenge due in May (I wasn't available to photo at the challenge).  I love that she used concentrated scraps.

Design Wall Monday and Wedding

My Rouge River Log Cabins blocks are all made.  I even got to piece the center section together.  Now, I just need to add the border blocks.  I'm glad this one is getting close to being done! LOL

 I had another birthday on Saturday and my brother also got married on that day.  I had a wonderful birthday, first sewing with the scrap quilting club, attending the wedding and then visiting with family (especially those from out of town) and friends.

Design Wall Monday and Retreat Update

I've received a lot of verbal comments regarding my lack of blogging.  I didn't think anyone would miss me so I appreciate the prompts to post on my blog.  I did not post last month's scrap quilting club photos and I'll do that sometime this week (if I can find the pictures).

I want to give a gigantic shout out to the Sew Sweet Quilt Shop in Brunswick, Missouri.  This was there first annual (did you see the word ANNUAL) quilt retreat.  They featured Missouri instructors this year, including artists Tula Pink, Cindy Lammon, Lyna Dagley, Carl Hentsch, Jenny Doan, and myself.  Jessica and Jeanette definitely know how to throw a party.  If I were you, I'd mark my calendar to attend this event next year as it is money well spent.  It will be an annual event the 3rd weekend in July; no excuses - start planning to attend!  If you'd like more information, send me an email and I'll tell you all about it. I didn't take very many photos as I was too busy "oohing" and "aahing" and of course teaching class and presenting a lecture.  Here are a couple of photos from the workshop.  The first one is some of the students working on the exploding star quilt and the second is the finished product of a student in Tula Pink's class.

 In the last week I made this clothes line tote bag.  It has lining and pockets inside.  I really get a kick out of making something from trash.  I wrapped strings leftover from squaring up fabrics, wrapping it around the clothes line.  I wanted the handles to be made from clothes line too but after making them, it broke my machine when sewing the double layers - I WOULDN'T DO IT IF I WERE YOU - it cost me a trip to the sewing machine repair center! I love my tote and plan to make another.

 I'm also still working on the last Rouge Rive Log Cabin blocks; these are my remaining sections to be pieced.

 Last up, same photo as in last post, but I do have the top sewn.  I'm looking for those fabric pieces that I put in a "special place" so I wouldn't lose them; well, I can't find them and it's starting to bother me as I want this project completed.

Design Wall Monday...I made it although it's late...

I've had another busy couple of weeks.  I spent last Monday in Cedar Rapids, Iowa with Eastern Iowa Heirloom Quilters guild.  I had a wonderful time teaching the exploding star class and presenting my scrap quilts and sampler quilts lectures.  It was a long but very fulfilling day and I enjoyed everyone I met in Cedar Rapids.  I did visit two quilt shops in the Marion area before I jumped on the highway back home.  I also stopped in Hannibal, Missouri for a little quilt shopping during my break as well.

Teaching got me motivated to work on some projects as I really, really missed "hands-on sewing" these past few months.  First up is I have 99 blocks pieced for my Rouge River log cabin quilt top.  Here I have cut pieces for the last 45 blocks that I plan to make.  The original pattern calls for 192 blocks but I'm making 144.

 I posted a scrappy panel last time.  Here is the tote I told you it would turn into.  It has a side pocket for my smart phone, inside multi-pocket panel and inside zippered pocket.  The handle is cording and I really like the way it stays on my shoulder.  Had fun making this challenge tote that had to be made with scraps.

 While in Cedar Rapids, saw this quilt pattern by Maple Island and had to come home and make a few blocks.

 While cleaning up some of my sewing supplies, I came across some strips I'd been saving for rope bowls.  I decided to start a rope tote this time.  Today I ran out of the purple fabrics so I need to search for more.  I don't have a plan so stay tuned to see how it turns out.

 My major accomplishment this week is I got back to work on my line dance t-shirt quilt.  I have the center and right panels completed.  Now I know why I procrastinated, finding other thing to do instead.  Because I didn't cut all my shirts to the same size (trying to get in as many as I could), I have a gigantic puzzle to piece.  Now, if you know me, you know it will not be boring as there was no way I could just add plan strips to get the sections to fit.  I'm having fun but it's taking a little longer than expected.  I've also misplaced some pieces that will be inserted between the rows..."where are you...."

Design Wall Monday

It's been a long time since I've posted and even longer since I've had something for design wall Monday!  I've been really, really busy with quilting lectures, quilting workshops, and line dancing events.  All of these activities have caused for much time spent writing lesson plans, making copies, and a whole lot of traveling that included massive amount of packing and unpacking.  I went to Altoona, Iowa in May and Indianapolis, Indiana in June.  I'm planning a few more trips before the end of the summer.

Here is a picture of me taken at a lecture I gave at the Kirkwood Public Library last Thursday.  I had approximately fifty attendees and they remarked how much they enjoyed the program.  Thank you Joan for selecting me as your June speaker.

My scrap quilting club will meet this Saturday.  I decided to work on the project the group will start so I can be prepared to answer questions.  I started this earlier this year, knowing it would be a project for the group but needed to do a quick refresher.  I like this photo as it really shows the values of the fabrics; not so sure it's as visible looking at it on my design wall.  This quilt is Rouge River Log Cabin and was in a magazine.  I need to figure out which magazine as my page is torn; will update later if I find it.

This is also a scrap quilting club project that was due last month, but I just got started yesterday.  It looks a little strange, but we are making totes using scraps, no yardage off the shelves.  I recycled some of the scraps from the string drunkard's path quilt top for one side.  The other side of the bag called for a pocket so I decided to use basic string piecing on that side; part of the pocket and strip isn't sewn down yet as I need to quilt it first. What you see here is the front and back sewn to the bottom.  I need to quilt this section  to batting.  Stay tuned to see how this turn out.  I'm hoping life don't interrupt my getting it completed by Saturday's meeting.

Kirkwood, Missouri Quilt Program - Free Admission

Design Wall Monday

Hi all,

I've been too busy to post on blogger but I have been quilting. Here is a picture of me taking a photo of myself (being silly) so at least my sense of humor is in tact.

I pieced a couple to tops not included in this post and have some scrap quilting club photos that need to be edited and uploaded. Mostly, I've been helping family members with their income tax returns and preparing for quilt lecturers.  Here is a photo of six containers of quilts I took to Piecemakers Quilt Guild last month.
 Hanging Garden is a top I recently completed that is part of my scrap quilting club group.  Next month I'll upload some different variations.

 My t-shirt quilt is stalled.  I received two more shirts that I cut and arranged, getting ready to start sewing but then a couple more people contacted me that will donate some shirts.  I will not receive them until the end of the month so I started working on other projects.  I'll work on this again in May or June.

I have had fun piecing this quilt top.  It still needs a border or two attached.  All the blocks are from Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Vol. 2.  These blocks either have a heart theme or used valentine type fabrics.  It's a little busy but I like it. The setting is an adopted from a Maple Island quilt pattern.

And I finished the applique block that I've had on hold for over a year.  It's an Apple Blossom pattern.  Sadly, the is the 5th block of 30.  I don't think I'll make all of them but I will make a few more.

Design Wall Monday

I had a very busy week, only being home Tuesday and Friday evening.  Previously during the week I went roller skating two evenings, line dancing on another night, and on Friday I decided a nap was in order.  Tuesday I sewed as I watched television; (anyone like Parenthood). I'm still working on the scrap quilting club's yearlong project.  I got all the setting triangles sewn.

Then I took the units to work and played with the layout; now I need to make the corner units.  On Saturday my sewing group met and I got about 1/2 of the quilt top sewn together but did not take another photo.

Then for a little variety, I starting cutting line dance related t-shirts to make a dance quilt.  I plan to add photos as well, so this will not be the typical t-shirt quilt.  I need to figure out a plan but I need to wait until the weekend when I'll receive a couple more shirts from other groups in the area.

I just realize I forgot to photo the pink and purple bricks that I'd framed.  I don't have a big enough space at home so I'll show it next week.

Design Wall Monday

I've been working on the scrap quilting club's yearlong project as I need to stay a step ahead of the group to coordinate the project.  I finally got all 16 geese blocks made and then made the next 9 blocks needed for the next steps.  For my light patches on the second set of blocks, I made my blocks like our ancestors.  I had pieces left over from cutting frames from strips.  I didn't want to waste them so I sewed them together like I've seen in quilts of old.

I did work on March's project too and almost have the top completed.  These are the blocks but this is not the setting and I don't have updated photo yet.  I made 115 blocks, 10 half blocks, and cut some sashing.  I have all 10 rows pieced but only 6 sewn together.  More on this project later.
